Dangerous plants: poplar, willow, oak

Large trees such as poplars, willows and oaks can be dangerous if grown near your home.

The shallow, fast-growing root system can spread up to 40 meters and absorb 1,000 liters of water and nutrients from the soil.

“It can live for about 50 years, and over time the roots get thicker and harder to remove,” added Bradley of Stokemont.

“Age, soil type, location, depth are all important when determining whether a tree is a problem.”

“Growing too close to a building can lead to an added risk of foundation cracks, subsidence and other structural defects, potentially costing £5,000-£25,000 to repair.”
