“EU wants to get rid of fossil fuels in Russia”
US President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this morning signed a deal in which the US and EU agree to a “joint game plan” for a safe and clean energy future.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the US president’s presence in Brussels this week “sends a very powerful message to the world”.
“The partnership across the Atlantic is stronger and more united than ever, and we are determined to face Russia’s brutal war,” she said.
“This war will be a strategic failure for Putin. Our cooperation on four consecutive sanctions against Russia has been special and unusual. Sanctions are now penetrating deep into the Russian system. To fund this brutal war It is depleting Putin’s resources for the sake of it.”
Ursula von der Leyen added, “Our work on sanctions also shows that when we act together, we become stronger and can actually make a difference.”
For the EU’s new gas agreement with the United States, von der Leyen thanked the American people for “unwavering support”.
“This support also extends to strengthening Europe’s energy security and independence from Russian fossil fuels. As you know, we aim to reduce and eliminate this dependence on Russian fossil fuels.
“And this, of course, can only be achieved through investment in renewable energy, above all else, but only through additional gas supply, including LNG supply.”
