Deciding on a smartphone model is not an easy task, but we have compiled a detailed guide on choosing the right and cheap phone. You can also get a new or used phone but here are the things to consider. Whether you are thinking of buying a new one or have used Google Pixel 2XL, keep the following in mind:

Operating system

With an operating system, everything is simple and complex at the same time. The simplicity is that only two of them are iOS and Android. The problem is that iOS is always quite expensive, and Android is available in many brands: Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Sony, and other Android smartphone makers see this system in their own way. The functionality is the same, but the “wrapper” can be very different.

Screen

  • Matrix: If you see the acronym TN, you don’t need such a smartphone. The colors will be scary, the brightness will be low, and the viewing angles will be very narrow. You need to choose OLED (Samsung has AMOLED) and IPS smartphones with different variants. What are their advantages and disadvantages?
  • Screen resolution affects the level of detail and clarity of the image. Therefore, I strongly do not recommend viewing resolutions lower than full HD (1920 × 1080 pixels). For larger diagonals of 6.2 inches and above, you can focus on 2.5K (2560 × 1440 pixels). It is important to understand that the higher the screen resolution, the higher the energy consumption. Unintentionally pursuing fashionable 4K (4096 × 3072) or anything close by is probably not necessary at all. You will lose a lot of autonomy, pay a lot more, and with the same 2.5K the visual difference will be less.
  • DPI density is a combination of screen size and resolution. If the budget allows, it is better to target values of 300 to 400 ppi. The smaller, the better you can see the pixelation, but at values above 400 you will pay for the larger number: the eye will not notice the difference.

Communications and wireless modules

  • SIM card. If you use more than one SIM card, buy a smartphone with support for two cards. Their format doesn’t matter – you can always ask them to replace the micro-SIM in the operator’s cabin with a more advanced nano-SIM standard – it’s a matter of 5 minutes. But keep in mind that using two SIM cards in a smartphone significantly increases energy consumption.
  • Wi-Fi version. The absolute minimum for 2022 is 802.11ac, which supports two bands of 2.4 and 5 GHz. Suitable for budget devices, but if you’re looking for an expensive flagship for two or three years, look for a support model for the 802.11ax – the same Wi-Fi 6 that everyone is talking about now. Is.
  • Bluetooth version is important if you are actively using wireless headphones and speakers: at least 5.0, and preferably 5.1 or 5.2. The last two standards have come a long way in terms of energy efficiency and signal stability. And BT 4.1 and 4.2, which can still be found in smartphones, are obsolete versions of 2014 and 2016.

Memory

Random Access Memory (RAM): The higher it is, the better – a large amount of RAM allows the gadget to handle a large number of calculations simultaneously. If you’ve ever opened 20-30 tabs in a budget smartphone browser, you know what we’re talking about: switching between them becomes unbearable. The maximum amount of RAM is 4–6 GB, 8 is also good, over 10 GB is already marketing and excess.

Camera

The quality of a smartphone’s camera seems to depend on the number of megapixels and lenses, but this is not the case. The photo module is one of the most expensive parts of the gadget, and the fact is that if you really need good photos and videos. Really cool cameras are the property of flagships.

When choosing a budget smartphone, you need to understand that if there are too many cameras, all the extra cameras will be just as bad. With a ridiculous resolution of 2 megapixels some macro modules will give a beautiful paragraph on the gadget’s promo site, but in reality you will find low quality images that literally fall apart in pixels. So it’s best to focus on one or two, but more or less decent, camera models in the low- to mid-range segment.
