The club decided to buy Spence, not me, Conte says.

Tottenham welcomed their sixth new face through the Hotspur Way gate this week, with Djed Spence following Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison and Clement Lenglet.

However, Antonio Conte revealed at a press conference that Spence was not actually one of his personal goals, but a club-led contract.

“For clubs, it’s not that simple to go to the transfer market and sign free players like Perisic or Foster, loan players like Wranglet and buy players with money like Richarisson, Visuma or Spence,” he said.

“Spence is the club’s investment. The club wanted it. I’m OK, this player is young but he has shown that he can be a great and important player for us. The club decided to buy him.”

These comments have led some to wonder if Conte wanted Spence, the club forced him to a right-back and whether the 21-year-old would be given play time.
