The 28-year-old Croatia national hit the floor when the Welsh striker rushed towards him with two X-legged feet in the 24th minute.

The cheers soon turned to anger when the Elland Road crowd cheered and the referee immediately waved a red card.

James looked startled, but officials undoubtedly witnessed Kovacic galloping around in pain while charging on his wild and dangerous two feet.

And when the VAR confirmed it, Leeds trudged off the pitch as the Chelsea player received treatment.

Kovacic was able to walk to the touchline with the help of a club physiotherapist before returning to the pitch.

And his return received huge boos when he turned into a pantomime villain.

Kovacic played for a while, then fell back inside the center circle, signaling Ruben Loftus-Cheek to leave the field and step away.

However, as he headed to the Chelsea dugout, behind the scenes many home supporters began to insult and viciously ridicule the former Real Madrid player.

The Chelsea staff started begging the ace to take a seat, but instead he only hurt Leeds fans even more when he accepted the abuse of his stride and put a big smile on his face.

Kovavic soon got an ice pack on his left ankle and, along with one of the club’s medical staff, started down the touchline towards the tunnel and got more words.

Last laugh with the taunts, but he now faces a race against time for Saturday’s Wembley showdown against Liverpool.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel later admitted: My ankle was swollen and it hurt a lot.

“For me, I am not a doctor and I have to wait for an examination, but there is little chance that he will be able to play. Absolutely bad news for us on a perfect evening.”
